该片围绕戏曲学校师生在艺术传承中的矛盾与和解展开，展现传统艺术坚守与师生情谊。。走村窜乡的何班主表演的精彩皮影戏吸引了山圪崂村的寡妇婵儿，而美貌的婵儿也令何班主心动。何的前妻因无法忍受其经常在外演戏不归家，把儿子屎蛋子留下后离开了。何一心希望屎蛋子能继承自己的事业，但屎蛋子始终对皮影戏没有兴趣，而男孩子八抬却处处跟着他。十年动乱时，皮影戏停演了，何成了“牛鬼蛇神”，婵儿也不得已另嫁他人。改革开放后，何又重新演起了皮影戏，屎蛋子却在镇上放起了外国电影，失望的何终将自己的艺术传给...。Edwin Antony (Hywel Bennett) is emasculated in an accident which kills a young philanderer. Doctors successfully replace his member with that of the dead man, but refuse to tell him the full story of the organ's origin.
